The Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL)  has been developing innovative technologies and solutions for cutting-edge DoD and intelligence programs for over six decades.

SDL’s internship program provides an exciting opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to get involved with state-of-the art technologies in space-, airborne-, and ground-based systems. With the support of engineers and mentors, interns will work on professional-level assignments that complement their academic studies. The program also includes training workshops, networking opportunities, and a variety of summer events and activities.

The Strategic and Military Space Division is looking  for an exceptional student mechanical engineers f or an internship based in Logan, Utah. This position will be tasked with varying duties based on current projects, needed support, and the development phase. Work could include developing, testing, and integrating of hardware and software systems for small satellites, sensor systems, and/or aerospace platforms, as well as helping to develop small satellite flight and ground systems. Interns will be paid a competitive hourly wage and will be tasked with varying duties based on current projects, needed support, and development phase.
This position has the potential of continued employment or transition to student/full-time employment requiring security clearance eligibility.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Designs thermal control systems for satellites and satellite subsystems
• Develops and analyzes finite element/finite difference thermal models of satellites and satellite subsystems
• Data analysis and report generation
• Develops thermal vacuum test plans and procedures
• Collaborates with system, structural, and electrical engineering disciplines

Other Opportunities May Include:

• Assembly and integration of ground support equipment
• Testing of ground support equipment
• Developing thermal analysis tools

Requirements:

• Ability to apply thermodynamic and heat transfer fundamentals to satellites and satellite subsystems
• Experience using finite element or finite difference tools for thermal analysis
• Experience writing code such as FORTRAN, Python, etc.
• Hands-on experience with mechanical assemblies and testing of hardware
• Ability to work independently and as a team member of students and professionals
• Take initiative and ask questions
• Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential
• Must be a U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain a US Government security clearance

Education

• Currently in a Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering program of study
• Junior, senior, or graduate student
• 3.0 GPA minimum is required
