Departmental Overview

The teaching and research activities of the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology (MCB) concern the molecular structures and processes of cellular life and their roles in the function, reproduction, and development of living organisms.

This agenda covers a broad range of specialized disciplines, including biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, structural biology, genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, cell biology, developmental biology, tumor biology, microbiology, immunology, pathogenesis and neurobiology.

The types of living organisms from which the departmental faculty draws its working materials are as diverse as its disciplinary specializations, ranging from viruses and microbes through plants, roundworms, annelids, arthropods, and mollusks to fish, amphibia, and mammals.

The faculty of the department is organized into five divisions: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; Cell and Developmental Biology; Genetics, Genomics and Development; Neurobiology; and Immunology and Molecular Medicine.

Position Summary

The position supports the research lab focused on early-stage discovery and basic biology of stem cell behavior during tissue regeneration, including dysfunction during aging. Under direct supervision, the position will assist with Lab organization, mouse husbandry, generation, and maintenance of murine organoid cultures, and perform genetic screens and regeneration studies. Projects include protein engineering, genome editing, and studies on regeneration and fibrosis.

Responsibilities

Molecular Biology and Biochemical Techniques

  • Conduct routine molecular biology procedures, including qPCR, biochemical assays, and immunocytochemistry.
  • Perform organoid culture work, protein engineering, and genome editing techniques with guidance from senior lab members.
  • Support genetic screening and regeneration studies as directed.

Animal Care and Experimental Preparation

  • Maintain mouse colonies, performing regular care and husbandry to support experimental needs.
  • Assist in generating and maintaining murine organoid cultures for use in research studies.
  • Prepare tissue samples and perform histology as needed for experiments.

Lab Organization and Maintenance

  • Manage lab inventory, order necessary supplies, and maintain stock of reagents and chemicals.
  • Implement lab safety protocols and maintain organized, safe laboratory spaces. Support general lab upkeep, including autoclaving waste, equipment maintenance, and cleanliness.

Data Management and Collaboration

  • Record experimental data in lab notebooks and electronic systems, ensuring accuracy and compliance with lab protocols.
  • Participate in lab meetings to discuss ongoing research and receive updates on procedures.
  • Contribute to basic data preparation and reporting under supervision.


Required Qualifications

  • Proficiency in basic molecular biology techniques, including pipetting, dilutions, and sample handling.
  • 6-12 months of research lab experience (classroom-based lab experience not applicable).
  • Strong organizational and communication skills; ability to work effectively in a team environment and follow detailed instructions.
  • Competence with MS Office tools, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with mouse handling, tissue culture, and standard cellular biology techniques.
  • Familiarity with analysis of sequencing data using R, python and unix.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills; ability to follow verbal and written instructions precisely.


Salary & Benefits


This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) non-exempt career position, which is biweekly at an hourly rate and eligible for UC Benefits.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.


The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $26.52 (Step 1) - $28.90 (Step 5).
