Research Assistant, Department of Psychology - Georgetown University College of Arts & Sciences

Requirements

The Laboratory on Social & Affective Neuroscience (LSAN) is located in the Department of Psychology at Georgetown University. We conduct research aimed at understanding the social, cognitive, and neural basis of social processes that include empathy, altruism, and aggression. We tackle these questions using multiple approaches that include functional and structural brain imaging in adults from both typical and special populations, as well as behavioral methods. Current research projects include behavioral and brain imaging investigations of altruism, generosity, empathy, social learning, and antisocial behavior.

The Research Assistant (RA) is initially a one-year term position in the Department of Psychology at Georgetown University College of Arts & Sciences. They are involved in a range of functions essential to carrying out empirical research for a research project funded by a dedicated philanthropic gift to Dr. Marsh. The RA applies for (and manages) approval for research by institutional oversight bodies and coordinates protocol development, recruitment, and behavioral data collection for the research project. The RA cleans and codes collected data and performs preliminary analysis and interpretation in collaboration with Dr. Marsh and senior researchers in the lab including the Laboratory Manager, PhD students, and post-doctoral researchers. The RA leads and directs the work of undergraduate research assistants involved in participant recruitment and data collection for the project. Additional duties include but are not limited to:

  • Develop and pilot protocols, coordinating the development of image, text, and video stimuli for funded research project.
  • Code and build surveys using Qualtrics, recruiting, screening, and scheduling participants.
  • Collect behavioral data in-person and online, assisting with cleaning and preparing data for analysis.
  • Communicate with collaborators and compensate participants.
  • Assist PI with the development of manuscripts, applying for approval for research by oversight bodies for funded research project.
  • Ensure that required lab members are on protocol, submitting modifications to protocols as needed.
  • Communicate with IRB staff and lab members in a timely manner.


Work Interactions


The Research Assistant reports directly to the PI. The Research Assistant may supervise one or more undergraduate research assistants. The Research Assistant interacts with human subject participants, research staff, and the PI, post-doctoral researchers, graduate students, and undergraduate research assistants in the laboratory in-person, via email, and via phone.



Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Minimum of one-year prior experience working in psychology or cognitive science research laboratory
  • Quantitative abilities sufficient to complete preliminary data analysis
  • Human interaction skills for interacting with human research subjects; organizational skills
  • Prior experience managing junior trainees or staff preferred

Pay Range:


The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$17.92 - $26.80


Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
