Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

INCHIP seeks a Research Assistant with experience in early childhood programs and development. Ideal candidates will have experience in child development and applied research and speak conversational Spanish. This position offers an opportunity to obtain training and hands-on experience with applied research, interventions, data collection, and child and family well-being.

The Research Assistant will work with the research team including a project director, postdoc, graduate students, and faculty. The position is an excellent opportunity for highly motivated individuals preparing for a graduate career in human development, psychology, public policy, or a related field. The successful candidate will have opportunities to be involved in conference submissions and presentations as well as manuscript preparation.

Work will take place at the Storrs campus of the University of Connecticut, as well as in Hartford and New Haven in community based childcare settings, under the direct supervision of Drs. Chazan Cohen and Lombardi in the Human Development and Family Sciences department.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Recruiting and maintaining contact with infants/toddlers and their families.
  • Collecting and processing questionnaires and direct assessment data.
  • Assisting with data management efforts.
  • Coordinating, training, and working with undergraduate research assistants.
  • Participating in data collection on evenings and weekends, as necessary.
  • Engaging in lab meetings.
  • Performing other duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor's degree in human development, psychology, education, or a related field.
  2. Ability to communicate in conversational Spanish.
  3. Effective communicator with excellent interpersonal skills.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as with a group.
  5. Track record of strong organizational skills, with attention to detail/conscientiousness.
  6. A commitment to maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and diverse research lab environment.
  7. Established ability to manage multiple tasks and exceptional time-management skills.
  8. Experience with data entry, word processing, or related computer skills.
  9. Confirmed availability of transportation for travel between Storrs and community based childcare settings in Hartford and New Haven.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Previous research experience in a research lab focused on early childhood OR at least 1 year of research data collection experience plus documented experience working with young children.
  2. Experience with data collection with young children or families.
  3. Experience working with young children and families.
  4. Experience collecting or processing survey data.
  5. Experience with REDCap (or similar project management) and Microsoft software, including SharePoint, Excel, etc.
  6. Experience with coding observational data.
  7. Experience with participant recruitment and communication.
  8. Experience using statistical software such as SPSS, Stata, or R.
  9. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This position is a full-time, end-date appointment. The desired start date would ideally be during October 2024.?This position is subject to annual renewal, contingent on satisfactory performance and budget funding. This position is primarily located at the Storrs campus, as well as in Hartford and New Haven in community based childcare settings. Other rights, terms, and conditions of employment are contained in the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Connecticut and the American Association of University Professors UConn Chapter (AAUP).
