Position Overview

We are looking for a passionate data scientist to make change and foster improvements to justice and community well-being in the state of Illinois. Use your data analytic skills to examine public programs and data trends to better inform and advance understanding of data in the public sector. Be a leader in translating research data, findings, and implications to state and local policymakers, practitioners, and communities for positive change.

Essential Functions

• Plans, formulates, and executes data analytic, data archiving, and research activities of a complex, technical, and
  scientific nature to advance knowledge and programming in areas such as criminology, public health, victim studies,
  and violence prevention
• Performs data collection, standardization, cleaning, warehousing, and analysis of complex, administrative and
  technical data.
• Disseminates scientific and technical data and reports
• Establishes and maintains work-related professional contacts with internal and external entities, including other
  government agencies and universities
• Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated
  above

Minimum Qualifications

• Requires a doctoral degree in a course of study requiring advanced mathematics or statistics, such as social science,
  computer/data sciences, or physical science
• Requires a master’s degree in a course of study requiring advanced mathematics or statistics, such as social science,
  computer/data sciences, economics, or physical science, and requires two years of professional research, information
  technology, or data science experience

Preferred Qualifications

• Mastery of Python or R, as demonstrated by two years professional experience writing code to conduct quantitative
  analyses preferred
• Authored at least three documents that describe results of quantitative analyses for non-technical audiences preferred
• Two years of experience building online dashboards using Tableau, PowerBI, or SAP Business Objects, or R/Python based
  web platforms preferred
• One year of experience conducting spatial analyses using Geographic Information Systems (ArcGIS, QGIS, or statistical
  software using spatial data) preferred
• One year of experience using SQL database software preferred
• One year of experience directing or training technical or non-technical audiences on quantitative analysis preferred

Conditions of Employment

• Requires proper documentation for approved work in the United States

• Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate

• Requires appropriate, valid driver's license

• Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history

About the Agency

ICJIA responds to community needs with research and federal and state grants administration. ICJIA administers over 100 million dollars in grants, including the R3 (restore, reinvest, renew) grants (funded through the tax on legalized cannabis), state violence prevention grants, and federal grants including under the Violence Against Women Act and the Victims of Crime Act. ICJIA convenes groups and collaborates on efforts to reform the criminal justice system. ICJIA leads criminal justice reform efforts by supporting policy makers through research.
