HNTB is seeking a highly motivated and talented individual to join our growing Environmental Team as part of the NY Planning & Mobility department. We are looking for a technically sound environmental scientist and/or planner with strong technical skills who is ready to be challenged and support environmental planning, documentation and permitting tasks for major transportation clients.
This position involves a mixture of office and field duties including but not limited to environmental reviews, wetland delineation, ecology/habitat surveys, mitigation site suitability evaluation, biological assessments, construction/post-construction monitoring, NEPA documentation, New York State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQR) and environmental permit preparation (federal and state).
What You'll Do:
Conducts research, gathers scientific information and data, and leads field investigations among other supporting activities.
Determines or develops best methodology and technical approaches for conducting analysis in field work; sets up test equipment as necessary to obtain scientific data.
Using established prescribed templates, prepares data analysis, modeling, written reports, maps, etc. as appropriate to support findings as it pertains to the natural or man-made environment in the study area.
Reviews and evaluates technical reports and plans of scientific aspects of proposed projects for the environmental review of projects including permitting, and development of mitigation plans.
Examines and evaluates present and future potential environmental science effects relating to the planning, design, and construction of proposed projects.
Serves as task lead or principal author in the preparation of reports, graphs, and diagrams on scientific aspects relating to specific projects.
Provides technical support to project managers as situations arise during the construction of project that require scientific assistance.
Supports the marketing efforts as assigned.
Schedules of new and on-going projects.
Prepares permits for public and private clients with respect to acquisition and compliance for wetland impacts, bridge construction, and/or threatened/endangered species.
Assists in organizing, preparation of public meetings.
Attends various meetings with clients, other engineering firms, and staff.
Performs other duties as assigned.
What You'll Need:
Bachelor's degree in Geology, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Archeology, Anthropology or related field and 4 years relevant experience, or
Master's Degree in Geology, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Archeology, Anthropology or related field and 3 years of relevant experience
What You'll Bring:
Experience with state permitting, including NYSDEC.
Experience with federal environmental permitting, including USACE and USCG and ESA Section 7 Consultation.
Excellent project organizational skills.
Highly collaborative, positive and proactive communication skills.
Experience performing ecology/habitat surveys and conducting field work including wetland delineation to support permitting and the environmental review process.
Experience conducting the necessary analyses for permit applications and technical environmental reports.
Experience supporting the preparation of permit applications and coordination with the reviewing agencies.
What We Prefer:
Experience with environmental permitting for transportation agencies including NYSDOT, NYCDOT, Amtrak, and MTA as well as other New York City agencies including New York City Department of Parks and New York City Department Environmental Protection.
Experience with GPS/GIS mapping, data development and management, GIS/CADD integration and finished map production.
Wetland Delineation Certification.

The approximate pay range for New York is $72,602.78 - $136,130.21. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as physical work location within the state.
