About the Role:
We're looking for a Commercial Lines Underwriter to join our Commercial Underwriting team! In this role, you'll evaluate and process commercial insurance applications, ensuring they align with our product and coverage guidelines. Your work will help drive new business while maintaining a profitable and growing portfolio.
As part of a collaborative team, you'll work alongside underwriters, technicians, and agents to support business objectives. Occasional field and overnight travel may be required to visit agencies, often in partnership with our Marketing and Loss Control teams.
Location & Work Format:
This role offers flexibility! Candidates residing within our five-state territory (Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, or Ohio) are eligible to work remotely. Those in the greater Hastings, MI area may choose to work onsite or in a hybrid arrangement. Regardless of location, this position follows standard office hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Candidates outside the five-state territory may be considered based on experience and qualifications.

Key Responsibilities:
- Review and process commercial insurance applications, ensuring they meet underwriting guidelines and corporate objectives.
- Maintain high service standards and stay informed about commercial products, pricing, and coverage options.
- Apply underwriting guidelines, authority levels, and industry best practices to achieve quality and profitability goals.
- Communicate and negotiate effectively with agents, policyholders, and internal teams.
- Assist in training and mentoring new underwriters and underwriting technicians.
- Use various systems and tools to support overall business objectives.
- Engage in ongoing professional development, including continuing education.
- Perform other duties as assigned by leadership.

What We're Looking For:
- Bachelor's degree in Insurance, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Prior experience in commercial underwriting within a Property & Casualty insurance carrier is highly preferred.
- Industry certifications such as General Insurance (AINS) or higher-level designations (CPCU, AU) are a plus.
- Strong PC skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
