Org. Setting and ReportingThis position is located in the regional political-operational structure of the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations (DPPA-DPO), in the Northern Africa Division. The Northern Africa Division is tasked with monitoring and reporting on major developments in the countries under its purview, and recommending actions for addressing the related challenges, risks, and threats. Under the overall guidance of the Director and Deputy Director of the Division, the Associate Political Affairs Officer will report to a Division Team Leader/Senior Political Affairs Officer. ResponsibilitiesWithin delegated authority, the Associate Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties: • Analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press; maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political developments in North Africa. • Assists senior officials with briefing notes, background papers and talking points. • Prepares summaries of meetings and articles from a wide variety of sources and drafts a variety of correspondence, and sections of reports. • Monitors political, socio-economic, and other politically relevant developments in North Africa. • Provides input to correspondence, notes, memoranda and responses to queries for review by the Team Leader. • Contributes to the backstopping of field missions supported by the Division. • Performs other related duties as required. EducationAn advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in political science, social sciences, international relations, law or related field is required. Work ExperienceA minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area, or the successful completion of the Young Professionals Programme Examination (YPP)/United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P) is required. Experience working in or on North Africa or the wider region is desirable. Experience providing backstopping support to a peacekeeping operation or special political mission is desirable. Experience providing support and advice to senior officials in an international and/or multigovernmental organisation is desirable. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position(s) advertised, fluency in both oral and written English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
